Hans Jørgensen født 1795 i Vellinge

Hans Jorgensen born 1795 in Vellinge - a place in Denmark

This is the church in Bederslev, North Funen in Denmark!
Each summer Americans come to this place to find their roots. Hoping to find the graves and tombstones of their ancestors, the churchyard is but a disappointment. In Denmark tombstones might be removed after 20 or 30 years. Denmark is a small country, and we don't have land enough to keep the graves for ever.
But we can tell that the North Eastern part of the churchyard, which is closest to Vellinge, was reserved only for people from Vellinge.
The tower of a church in Denmark is always facing West.
And it was indeed here in Bederslev church, their ancestor, Hans Jorgensen born 1795 in Vellinge, went to church with his parents!

Hans Jørgensen blev født i Vellinge 29. nov. 1795.

Hans Jorgensen was born in Vellinge Nov 29, 1795. He was a little week, when born, why he was christened in his home. Second Sunday in Advent he was brought to Church. His father was the weaver Jorgen Christensen. Mother's name was Else Marie Jensdatter.
The photo shows weaver Jens Jensen in his house in Vellinge about 1930. We don't know in which house Hans Jorgensen grew up. Perhaps in this very house - in fact it was the same kind of loom, which stood in the home of Hans Jorgensen. But at the time many North Funen people had a loom.

James Hansen. 1823-1897.
Son of Hans Jorgensen.
Zion sagde man dengang.
Hans Jørgensens hustru bukkede under på rejsen. Hans Jørgensen giftede sig igen. Dorthe hed hans anden kone. Parret fik en stor børnflok. Endnu flere børnebørn. Mange flere oldebørn.

Hans Jorgensen married Maren Pedersdatter from the mill in Svaerup. They had six sons. One of them was Jens - or James Hansen. James was baptized as a Mormon in Copenhagen in 1851. The same year he started his mission on Funen, and he christened both his parents and his brothers.
The family decided to emigrate. During the journey Hans Jorgensen lost his wife. He married again. "Dorthe" was the name of his second wife. They raised a large family. They had more grandchildren and even more great-grand children.

James Hansen (photo) emigrated too. He married more women. 13 wives bore him 36 children. He had far more than 100 grandchildren. The brothers of Jens Hansen also had many children.
The conclusion is that Hans Jorgensen, born in Vellinge 1795, is the ancestor of thousands of Americans. And that's the reason why, that Americans each summer come back to Hans Jorgensen's native soil in Bederslev Parish in Denmark.
